31 Flavors

Ahhh I'm 31 now. The actual day itself stunk, but before and after were wonderful. I'm really quite spoiled. I treated myself to a hair appointment where I committed to pink hair. I've wanted to do that since Gwen Stefani circa 1999. I couldn't do it when I was in school or when I was working, and since I'm hopefully returning to work in a year or two now was the time! It was a little too bright initially but I'm loving the toned down color now.

We celebrated as a family on the 3rd and 4th by taking a family trip to Chattanooga. We had so much fun swimming, learning about penguins, and playing with spiderwebs at the Children's Museum. We ate so much good food and ran through the rain. I had a blast. It was such a good way to start another year. Then I got to come home to a seriously delicious dinner with my sweet friends, a pizza from my bestie, and had a super relaxing spa day at Carmen's Day Spa down the road. My in-laws and Josh treated me to studio lights too! I'm so excited to not have to rely on inconsistent sunshine for my studio sessions. Sure there was the occasional bump in the road, or on the head (I likely got my second concussion as a mom), but I am blessed to have people who care about me.

Week 42:

I beat on my chest like Tarzan and I have a happy, mad, anything really scream that makes Eli laugh and laugh. I cough to get your attention and bear walk around the house. I click my tongue and roll balls to chase them. I went to the church nursery for the first time and didn't cry at all (even though mom may have teared up a little). I use my walker like a big boy.

Week 43:
Mom and dad took me on my first trip to Chattanooga. I was unimpressed with the aquarium but I was a big fan of the Children's Museum. Mom and dad bought me an inchworm toy I adored at the museum and brother and I play with it constantly. I'm teething again and I will cruise on over to mom and bite her leg. My fifth tooth came in! I try to share my binky with dad but he keeps denying me. I kiss myself in the mirror and I fake sneeze to make mom laugh.

Taking pictures of mom taking pictures

I say "yahoo!" like Maui in Moana and I like to fix things with my fish hook. I tell mom, "I want to be a farmer, what do you want to be?" and tell her, "When you were a little boy..." I try to do whatever brother does and am good at comforting him. I pointed to the left arrow in the bathtub and told mom "Lefty loosey mama!" I make up interesting exercises and I like to play delivery with my dump truck.  When we were looking at the penguins I told mom, "hey he has a hair tie on him!" I pretend to see babies in clouds like the characters in UP. I like to give thumbs up and am interested in what everything says. I pretend to "read" constantly.

Tuesday Tips

This week’s focus is…         MENU Oh how I love food. After you’ve come up with your theme and your décor, it seems (at least to me) for the menu to come along naturally. I do have a few rules I try stick to. When I throw a party I generally like to have something crunchy you can snack on, something healthy(ish), something you could consider to be what I call “real food” aka something you would eat as part of a main meal, at least 2 drink options, and something deliciously sweet. Although I try to have some of the food options be theme-specific, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary. People might remember if your food was theme specific, but they’re definitely going to remember if your food was delicious. Don’t feel like you can’t make some of your favorite staples for a party! Make food you would like to eat- especially if you’re hosting. You might just have leftovers. If you’re staple food is steak, or something equally expensive or equally larg...

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

First of all….Can you name the seven dwarfs? Just try it. Kills me every time.Okay moving on. Of course today’s party I’m working on a Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs themed party. I think I would start by setting up a little “forest” for the kids to walk through on the way in- complete with either stuffed or cardboard cut-out animal bunnies, chipmunks and deer. Little birds (most likely paper) would be hanging from the door frame. I’d be going for this kind of feeling (but with the princess not so sad let’s hope!) I would love to have a dress up station with a nod to “Mirror Mirror on the Wall”. Maybe something like this but more down to earth like this . Of course there would need to be apples galore. Candied apples? Carmel apples with a carmel apple decorating station? Rice crispy treat apples ? Donut hole mini apples ? Oh the options. (I also looove the Snow White cut-out in the mirror- adorable). Some sort of poison potion (with dry ice) would be super cute too. Maybe...

Dust yourself off & try again

Okay, I have persisted and I have a few tips. Fluffier frosting is definitely not the way to go. I used a fluffier frosting and the frosting ended up coming off the cookie with the stamp. This icing seemed to work much better. Secondly, brush cornstarch on top of the icing to limit the stickiness. PaperVine was so right about that! I had a rubber stamp and an acrylic stamp and the rubber stamp worked much better. That’s not to say that acrylic stamps won’t work, but I didn’t have an acrylic block to put the food coloring on. I used the paper towel method I read about somewhere (for the life of me I can’t find it), where you put paper towels into a Tupperware container and soak it with food coloring. You use the paper towels as a sort of ink-pad. Next time I may just shell out the cash for an un-inked foam pad. I’m also interested to see how different types of food coloring works. Some people swear by gel while others swear by airbrush food coloring. Thirdly, make sure you’re hu...
