Four Friends and a Dog

Why is it 4 friends- 1 dog? The time had come. For various reasons/illnesses we put Kito down. I miss my little friend, my constant companion for 8 years. Optimus is pouting a little and I’ve been just trying not to think about it. That is a terrible experience- essentially executing your friend unbeknownst to him. This is him the day before he died.

In better news- this month I celebrated my 29th birthday. I actually enjoy getting older. I care a lot less about trivial things and care a whole lot more about things that do matter. I like being married and having a child and creating a life together. Josh got me an underwater camera for Hawaii (yes!) and I was completely spoiled with flowers and gifts from my family.

My best friend and her beautiful, sweet, happy baby also came to visit. I forgot how much fun I could be! There is something so nice about hanging out with someone you’ve known for almost a decade. There are no fronts. No pretense. We do fun things just because they’re fun. We don’t feel the need to dress all out for breakfast or plan all day. We just genuinely enjoy being together and that’s the best. Our little boys loved each other too! They had so much fun playing and teaching each other new things. I hope they’ll be friends for life.

I say new words like…fish, Jesus, juice, milk, poop (ha!), puppy, shut up (sigh…from us telling the dogs not to bark)
I weigh 25 lbs 12 oz
My favorite food is bananas (they’re back in favor), cinnamon toast
My favorite toy is my chompy shark Jayci got me or my Dig In book. I also enjoy anything mom frowns upon. I love to stand on the coffee table, check the trash to see if anything good is inside, switch the surge protector on and off, and jump from the end table onto the bed (while holding contraband from the end table like nail polish).
Some other things I do include… helping mom do the dishes, holding hands when praying, and “reading” books quietly by myself.
A Memorable Moment for Mom was: when Eli climbed the oven and inched a pan of brownies to the edge so he could grab handfuls of chocolately goodness. He was so smart about it. He’d grab some and then hurry down so when I checked on him he was just looking all sweet and innocent. The handprints in the brownies gave him away.

Have a great July!

Tuesday Tips

This week’s focus is…         MENU Oh how I love food. After you’ve come up with your theme and your décor, it seems (at least to me) for the menu to come along naturally. I do have a few rules I try stick to. When I throw a party I generally like to have something crunchy you can snack on, something healthy(ish), something you could consider to be what I call “real food” aka something you would eat as part of a main meal, at least 2 drink options, and something deliciously sweet. Although I try to have some of the food options be theme-specific, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary. People might remember if your food was theme specific, but they’re definitely going to remember if your food was delicious. Don’t feel like you can’t make some of your favorite staples for a party! Make food you would like to eat- especially if you’re hosting. You might just have leftovers. If you’re staple food is steak, or something equally expensive or equally larg...

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

First of all….Can you name the seven dwarfs? Just try it. Kills me every time.Okay moving on. Of course today’s party I’m working on a Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs themed party. I think I would start by setting up a little “forest” for the kids to walk through on the way in- complete with either stuffed or cardboard cut-out animal bunnies, chipmunks and deer. Little birds (most likely paper) would be hanging from the door frame. I’d be going for this kind of feeling (but with the princess not so sad let’s hope!) I would love to have a dress up station with a nod to “Mirror Mirror on the Wall”. Maybe something like this but more down to earth like this . Of course there would need to be apples galore. Candied apples? Carmel apples with a carmel apple decorating station? Rice crispy treat apples ? Donut hole mini apples ? Oh the options. (I also looove the Snow White cut-out in the mirror- adorable). Some sort of poison potion (with dry ice) would be super cute too. Maybe...

Dust yourself off & try again

Okay, I have persisted and I have a few tips. Fluffier frosting is definitely not the way to go. I used a fluffier frosting and the frosting ended up coming off the cookie with the stamp. This icing seemed to work much better. Secondly, brush cornstarch on top of the icing to limit the stickiness. PaperVine was so right about that! I had a rubber stamp and an acrylic stamp and the rubber stamp worked much better. That’s not to say that acrylic stamps won’t work, but I didn’t have an acrylic block to put the food coloring on. I used the paper towel method I read about somewhere (for the life of me I can’t find it), where you put paper towels into a Tupperware container and soak it with food coloring. You use the paper towels as a sort of ink-pad. Next time I may just shell out the cash for an un-inked foam pad. I’m also interested to see how different types of food coloring works. Some people swear by gel while others swear by airbrush food coloring. Thirdly, make sure you’re hu...
